The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a new law that prevents products linked to deforestation from being sold in or exported from the EU market. The goal is to ensure that certain products consumed in the EU do not contribute to global deforestation or forest degradation.
This regulation applies to seven key commodities: cattle, coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soy, rubber, and wood. It also applies to many products made from these commodities, like beef, chocolate, furniture, and tires.
To comply with EUDR, companies must prove that their products are deforestation-free and were produced in line with the local laws of their country of origin. This requires a process called due diligence.
EUDR Reporting Requirements
To demonstrate compliance, companies must submit a Due Diligence Statement (DDS) for each shipment to an EU information system called the EU TRACES system. This statement confirms that a due diligence process has been completed and that the products have a "negligible risk" of non-compliance.
The DDS requires specific information, which you as a supplier may be asked to provide:
- Geolocation Data: GPS coordinates of the plots of land where the commodities were produced or harvested. For a large shipment of a bulk commodity like soy, this could mean providing the coordinates for hundreds of plots of land.
- Production Date: The date or time range when the commodity was produced.
- Product Information: Information such as common names and scientific names.
- Due Diligence Statement (DDS) Data: If you are selling goods to your customer that were previously imported into the EU, then you will be asked to provide details from that original submission, including the DDS Reference and Verification Numbers.
- Quantity Information: The quantities of the goods reported.
- Producer Information: Producer names, countries
- Proof of Legality: Documents showing that the product was produced in compliance with all relevant laws of the country of origin. This includes land use rights, environmental protection laws, and human rights.
How Sourcemap Helps with EUDR Compliance
Sourcemap provides a platform that simplifies the EUDR compliance process for our customers and their suppliers (you).
1. Requests for Geospatial Data and Documents
Sourcemap allows customers to send you requests for geospatial data (farm and forest location data) and Due Diligence Statement (DDS) information. You can easily upload this data directly to the platform. Our tools support bulk uploads, which helps when you need to provide data for many different plots of land.
2. Validation of Information
Once you provide your information, Sourcemap's platform automatically validates that it can be used to Create a Due Diligence Statement. We check that the geospatial data is accurate and that your plots of land have not been deforested by comparing them against industry recognized deforestation data layers.
3. Creating a Due Diligence Statement
The Sourcemap platform connects the validated data to a customer's order. This allows the system to automatically generate a DDS for each shipment that requires one. This DDS is a complete document, including all the required information, that your customer can then submit to the EU TRACES system.
